                                                                      SQUARE

     Square is formation against enemy troops or cavalry.  Soldiers must be arranged like square.  Then they must turn to outside and level weapon attached bayonet.  It like a wall of spear.  Through this, if soldiers are attacked everywhere, soldiers can react to enemy attack everytime.  Also bayonet and soldiers cushion the shock of cavalry's attack.  In middle of square, friend,especially cavalry, wonded soldiers are holded by the wall of soldiers and bayonet.  Once this formation formed,  any enemy charge can not break.
.  But if a misile or bomb hit the formation,  most of soldiers formed square wll die.  A corners are also weak point.
    In The Expedition of Egypt,  Napoleon used a square against Mamluk Military in the pitched battle of pyramid.  In these days, France Military is the most modernest military but Mamulk military used the strategy of Middle ages. Napoleon arranged artilleyman and elite infantry at every corner.  Finally, The France soldiers lost their lifes about 300.  But Mamuluk Military lost their lifes about 3000.

     Column is formation which soldiers line in lengthway.  This is basis of formation. 
     Column has strong power of breakthrough and it can move rapidly.  So in charge,  most of military conducted this in the war.  But after appearance of machinegun,  this formation went out of use in battlefield.  Because a machinegun is so strong that column was collapsed easily. 
     In the French Revolution, Napoleon combined a rank and column.  In these day,  many volunteer joined France military.  But they were immature, so they can not act with normal soldiers.  Espesially, rank is very difficult because volunteer may run away from enemy.  As you know, if rank breakthrough,  it causes fetal damege for France Military.  Then Napoleon considered that normal soldier should be rank.  Volunteer should be column.  If there are volunteers in the back of other volunteers, they can not run away.
     We can see column in march,  and in train,  this have been using to take command of army.  in march,  this formation is often used.

    Rank is form which soldiers line against enemy.  In this formation,  there are no obstruction of the view and soldiers can cooplate with by the soldier.  So soldiers can blaze easily and  react legion.  But if one point is broken through,  the point do great damege to our formation.  So soldiers are demanded the mind that I never escape.
